Semrush vs Ahrefs: Prices, Data and Which to Pick (2026)

16 min read

Semrush vs Ahrefs comes down to breadth against depth. Semrush is a wide marketing suite: SEO, PPC, content and AI visibility, with daily rank tracking. Ahrefs is built around its own crawler and is strongest for backlinks and keyword research. As of October 2026, Ahrefs starts lower, and both cost more than $100 a month on their main plans.

This Semrush vs Ahrefs guide uses only the two vendors’ own pages, read in October 2026. It puts plans, prices and limits side by side, works out a 12-month cost, explains how each tool limits daily use, lists each vendor’s own data claims, and covers free plans and payment methods for buyers in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. It ends with a who-should-pick-which list. Semrush and Ahrefs are two of the biggest names in SEO software, and many people search for the pair the other way round, as ahrefs vs semrush. The answer is the same.

Semrush vs Ahrefs at a glance

If you only have a minute, this Semrush vs Ahrefs table shows the main differences. Prices are in US dollars, as each vendor listed them in October 2026.

The short answer: if you want one all-in-one tool for SEO and paid search, look at Semrush first. If links and competitor research drive your work, look at Ahrefs first.

What is the difference between Semrush and Ahrefs?

The main difference between Semrush and Ahrefs is scope. Both cover the core SEO jobs: keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink analysis, a site audit and rank tracking. Semrush then adds toolkits for advertising, local, content, social and AI PR. Ahrefs keeps its focus on search data and adds AI visibility through Brand Radar. Neither started as an AI tool, but both now sell SEO and AI visibility together.

Semrush in short

Semrush is a comprehensive SEO toolkit with extra marketing toolkits under one login. Its SEO toolkit holds Keyword Overview, the Keyword Gap tool, Backlink Gap, Backlink Audit, Position Tracking, the On-Page SEO Checker and a writing assistant. Semrush also sells Traffic and Market, Local, Content, Social and Advertising toolkits. Its own comparison page says Semrush gives the full marketing picture, while Ahrefs focuses mainly on backlinks and rankings. That is the vendor’s view, but the toolkit list backs it up: the main edge Semrush has over Ahrefs is breadth.

Ahrefs in short

Ahrefs gives you Site Explorer for any domain’s backlinks, organic keywords and top pages; Keywords Explorer with Traffic Potential and Parent Topic; Site Audit; Rank Tracker; Content Explorer on Standard and above; and Brand Radar for AI search. Ahrefs says its backlink index comes from its own crawler, AhrefsBot. Its FAQ says Ahrefs specializes in backlink intelligence and keyword research, while Semrush extends into PPC, social media and content workflows. On this point, the two vendors describe each other the same way.

Ahrefs vs Semrush pricing in October 2026

Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing looks close at first, but the plans are cut differently. The figures below come from the Semrush pricing page and the Ahrefs pricing page, as shown in October 2026. Both list prices in US dollars. Vendors change plans and offers, so check both pages in your own browser before you buy.

Semrush plans

Semrush plan Billed monthly Billed annually (per month) Websites and keywords tracked daily Notable additions
SEO $139.95 $117.33 5 websites, 500 keywords Basic keyword research and competitor analysis, Position Tracking, Site Audit
Starter (SEO + AI Search) $199 $165.17 5 websites, 500 keywords MCP access, 50 AI prompts tracked daily, 300 AI visibility reports a day
Pro+ (SEO + AI Search) $299 $248.17 15 websites, 1,500 keywords Historical SEO data, content optimization, keyword cannibalization analysis, multi-location and device tracking, 100 AI prompts
Advanced (SEO + AI Search) Custom quote (request a demo) 40+ websites, 5,000+ keywords SEO share of voice, API data integration, team users
Free $0, no credit card required 1 demo project 10 reports a day across the main tools

Each Semrush plan includes one user, and extra users start at $45 a month. Annual billing saves up to 17 %.

Ahrefs plans

Ahrefs plan Billed monthly Historical data Tracked keywords Credits per user Extra users
Starter $29 Limits not shown on the pricing page
Lite $129 6 months 750 1,000 a month Up to 2, at $40 each
Standard $249 2 years 2,000 Unlimited Up to 5, at $60 each
Advanced $449 5 years 5,000 Unlimited Up to 10, at $80 each
Enterprise $1,499, annual commitment Unlimited From 10,000 Unlimited $100 each

Ahrefs paid plans start at $29 a month. Ahrefs says annual billing is available on Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise: you pay for 10 months and get 12, about 17 % less. Standard adds Portfolios, Content Explorer, Batch Analysis and SERP comparison. Report Builder is a $99 a month add-on, and the Content Kit starts from $99 a month.

What a year costs

This table multiplies the vendors’ own prices. It is simple arithmetic, not a price either vendor lists. Semrush annual figures use its per-month annual price; Ahrefs annual figures use its 10-months-for-12 rule.

Plan 12 months, billed monthly 12 months, billed annually
Ahrefs Starter $348 Annual billing not listed for Starter
Ahrefs Lite $1,548 $1,290
Semrush SEO $1,679.40 $1,407.96
Semrush Starter $2,388 $1,982.04
Ahrefs Standard $2,988 $2,490
Semrush Pro+ $3,588 $2,978.04
Ahrefs Advanced $5,388 $4,490

So in a Semrush vs Ahrefs price check, Ahrefs is cheaper at each step on list price, but the plans are not the same shape. Unlike Ahrefs, Semrush tracks ranking positions daily on every paid plan; the Ahrefs pricing page lists weekly updates for Rank Tracker. Which is the best value depends on how often you need fresh ranking data. Ahrefs Lite also caps credits, which the next section explains.

How does each tool limit daily use?

This is where Semrush vs Ahrefs feels most different in daily work. Neither pricing page puts a price on one search, but the limits work in different ways.

  • Semrush limits what an account holds and how much it can pull: websites to monitor, keywords to track and reports per day. Semrush restricts the free plan to 10 reports a day. Paid plans raise those report limits, and Pro+ and Advanced raise them most.
  • Ahrefs Starter and Lite use credits. The Ahrefs FAQ says each report you open costs 1 credit, and some follow-up actions cost 1 more: applying filters, changing a date range, opening the SERP viewer. Reopening the same report within 30 minutes, paging and sorting are free. Site Audit and Rank Tracker do not use credits. Credits reset each billing cycle.
  • Ahrefs Standard and above list unlimited credits per user, under a fair-use model for everyday work.

The Ahrefs FAQ itself says credit-based usage on Starter and Lite can feel restrictive if you run frequent lookups. If you run many small checks for everyday SEO tasks, Ahrefs Standard or a Semrush plan will feel smoother. The same credit logic shapes shared Ahrefs seats, which our Ahrefs limits guide explains step by step.

Semrush vs Ahrefs for keyword research

Each is a strong keyword research tool, and both give search volume, keyword difficulty, intent and SERP data for each keyword.

  • Semrush’s keyword tools include the Keyword Magic Tool for large lists, Keyword Strategy Builder for grouping, and a Keyword Gap tool that lets you compare your keywords with rivals. Semrush shows CPC next to search volume for each keyword. Its data page says its keyword database covers 142 geographic databases.
  • Ahrefs for keyword research means Keywords Explorer. Its Traffic Potential and Parent Topic metrics tell you whether a long-tail phrase belongs to a bigger topic, and Standard adds keyword clusters and search intents. Ahrefs lists 217 locations.

In practice, Semrush wins for marketers who also run Google Ads, because keyword, CPC and ad data sit in one place. Ahrefs suits writers and SEO teams who plan content by topic. The best test is to run your own ten keywords through both and compare the numbers with Google Search Console.

Backlinks are the usual reason to pick Ahrefs over Semrush. Its Site Explorer, broken backlinks report and Best Links filter are built for link building, and Ahrefs’ Link Intersect tool finds sites that link to your competitors but not to you. Ahrefs says it updates referring domains and backlinks daily. Content Explorer, on Standard and above, helps find link prospects.

Semrush runs its own backlink crawler too. Its data page says the crawler covers about 10 billion web pages a day. Backlinks, Referring Domains, Backlink Gap and Backlink Audit cover the same jobs, and Backlink Audit is useful for spotting risky links pointing at your own site.

For link builders, the Semrush vs Ahrefs answer is usually Ahrefs. A crawler-first link building tool like Ahrefs remains the first choice for that work, and its main advantages over Semrush are these link tools and lower list prices. For an SEO who checks links now and then alongside other work, Semrush is enough.

Ranking data, site audits and other SEO features

Rank tracking is a clear split in Semrush vs Ahrefs. Semrush provides daily tracking on every paid plan, and Semrush supports multi-location and device tracking on Pro+. Ahrefs lists weekly updates for Rank Tracker on every plan, including Enterprise. If you report daily movements to clients, Semrush fits better.

For technical SEO, both have an audit. Semrush’s Site Audit tool is on every paid plan, and Starter adds an AI-ready audit. Ahrefs’ Site Audit tool runs on crawl credits: 100,000 a month on Lite, 500,000 on Standard and 1.5 million on Advanced. Ahrefs also sells Project Boost add-ons for always-on audits. Ahrefs says its crawler checks for more than 170 technical SEO issues, such as broken links, missing tags and duplicate content.

Ahrefs and Semrush data: what each vendor claims

Every SEO tool estimates, so in any Semrush vs Ahrefs test on one site the numbers will not match. Each vendor counts its data in its own way. This table lists each vendor’s own claims, from its own pages, as read in October 2026. The numbers are not measured on the same basis, so treat them as a guide to scale, not a contest.

Data claim Semrush (data page) Ahrefs (big data page)
Keywords 28.8 billion About 29 billion, filtered from 110 billion seen
Backlinks Over 43 trillion 35 trillion external backlinks
Domains 808 million 286 million after vetting
Locations 142 geographic databases 217 locations
Crawling About 10 billion pages a day 5 million pages a minute
AI prompts 317 million Over 480 million a month
Where the data comes from Own backlink crawler, third-party SERP data, and a clickstream panel of over 200 million users for traffic Own crawler, AhrefsBot, plus third-party keyword sources such as Google Keyword Planner and Search Console

Two honest notes. First, the Ahrefs FAQ says its organic traffic estimates can differ from real Search Console data by roughly 20 to 50 %, depending on the site, and that most practitioners pair Ahrefs with Search Console. Second, Semrush says its own two traffic views, one from keyword positions and one from clickstream data, will almost always show different numbers. Neither tool sees your real analytics. Compare trends, not single numbers, and trust your own analytics for your own site.

Beyond SEO, Semrush vs Ahrefs tilts toward Semrush, and here Semrush is the stronger pick. Its Advertising toolkit, with Advertising Research, covers Google Ads, and its data page says its ads database holds over 1 billion Google Ads with history back to January 2012. Pro+ adds content optimization, and Topic Research helps writers plan. Ahrefs shows competitors’ paid keywords and an Ads history chart, but it has no full PPC toolkit.

AI search is new ground for both. Semrush tracks AI prompts daily from Starter up, and its AI toolkits add visibility reports and brand sentiment. With Brand Radar, Ahrefs lets you look up any brand’s AI visibility, and each plan includes a small number of tracked AI prompts, with larger prompt packages sold separately. If AI search is the main reason you are buying, compare the prompt limits in the plan tables first.

Free plans, trials and payment methods

Semrush offers a free plan with one demo project and 10 reports a day, no card needed. Its pricing page also offers a seven-day free trial. Semrush says it charges a small amount to check the card and refunds it at once.

Ahrefs offers no free trial of its paid plans on the pages read for this guide. Ahrefs Free works only for sites you verify as your own, so you cannot research competitors with it. Its free standalone tools, such as the Keyword Generator and Backlink Checker, need no account but show limited results.

On payment, Semrush lists all major credit cards: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and UnionPay. Ahrefs says Lite, Standard and Advanced need a credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex or UnionPay), with invoice and wire transfer for Enterprise only. Neither pricing page showed prices in taka, rupees or Pakistani rupees, and neither lists PayPal or bKash. Your bank converts the US dollar price, so a card that works abroad matters as much as the plan.

How to use Ahrefs and Semrush on a smaller budget

DigitaVision sells shared “group buy” seats: one vendor account used by several members through the DigitaVision browser extension. Each member signs in once through the extension, so nobody needs the vendor’s password, and fair-use limits are listed per tool. DigitaVision is not affiliated with Semrush or Ahrefs. If a shared tool stops working, the replacement and refund policy applies.

  • Semrush: the Semrush group buy costs $3.99 per billing period. The page names the plan behind the seat and lists the daily limit. Treat refreshed keyword SERP data on the shared seat as a bonus, not part of the deal.
  • Semrush on a login of your own: Semrush Personal is a private Pro+ login set up by the team, with your projects kept apart. Check its page for availability and the access period.
  • Ahrefs: Ahrefs is not sold on its own here. It comes in the Ahrefs and Semrush pack, which gives the available Ahrefs Standard plan features with a daily credit limit, plus a Semrush seat. Credits go fast, because searches, filters and reports all draw on them, so plan your checks first. The pack price and limits are on the pack page.

The pack is a simple way to compare Ahrefs vs Semrush on your own data and settle Semrush vs Ahrefs for yourself: run the same keywords and domains through both tools and keep the one that answers your questions. Because the accounts are shared, keep client data and private notes out of them. You can pay in USD or BDT by card, PayPal, bKash or crypto, as listed at checkout.

Semrush or Ahrefs: who should pick which?

Use this Semrush vs Ahrefs list to match each tool to the work you do. Whether you pick Ahrefs or Semrush, the right answer depends on your daily work, not on brand.

  • Beginner with one site: start with the Semrush free plan or its seven-day trial, and Ahrefs Free for your own site. Learn the basics before you pay.
  • Blogger or content writer: use Ahrefs for topic research with Parent Topic and Content Explorer, or Semrush Pro+ for content optimization and the SEO Writing Assistant.
  • Link builder: go with Ahrefs. Site Explorer, Link Intersect and the Best Links filter are built for that job.
  • SEO and PPC together: Semrush is better here, because keyword, ad and SEO data share one workspace.
  • Agency: compare user costs. Semrush adds users from $45 a month; Ahrefs charges $40 to $80 per user. Semrush is also the one that tracks daily, which suits client reports.
  • Tight budget in South Asia: both vendors bill in US dollars by card. A shared seat, or the pack with both tools, costs a small part of a full plan in exchange for fair-use limits.

Bottom line: Semrush vs Ahrefs, which tool is best for SEO?

Semrush vs Ahrefs has no single winner. Choose Semrush if you want one platform for SEO, paid search, content and daily rank tracking. Choose Ahrefs if backlinks, keyword data and competitor research drive your results, and if you can afford Standard, where the credit cap goes away. On list price, Ahrefs is cheaper at each step, but the plans do not include the same things. Read both pricing pages, run your own ten-keyword test, and decide on the data you see.
